What to Expect at Hereford

  • Roundabouts are a defining feature — averaging 7.1 per route. Route 11 is the most demanding with 10, including Newtown Rd.
  • Traffic lights feature heavily — Route 8 includes 5 sets. Approach speed, correct positioning and smooth pull-away are all assessed.
  • Pass rate 60% — 12.1 points above the national average of 47.9%. One of the more achievable centres, though solid local route knowledge is still the best preparation.

Grandstand Road / Priory Place roundabout (DTC approach)
Most routes return to the DTC via the Grandstand Road / Priory Place roundabout before turning into Faraday Road. This roundabout is navigated under the most pressure — at the very end of your test. Know your exit and make sure your signalling and positioning are clean when it matters most.

Newtown Road double roundabout
Newtown Road has two roundabouts in quick succession and appears on seven routes. The instructions consistently say "roundabout ahead, roundabout left" — two exits to select in quick succession on the approach to the DTC. Don't let the familiarity of the route home make you complacent here.

College Road / College Green roundabout chain
College Road and College Green appear on six routes and often have two or three roundabouts close together. Route 5 for example takes you through "roundabout right, roundabout right" on College Road in sequence — read each roundabout individually and don't assume the same exit twice.

Roman Road / Old School Lane / Kingsway residential network
Roman Road appears on nine routes and the residential streets off it — Old School Lane, Kingsway, Cannon Pyon Road and Tillington Road — are used on several routes as an out-of-town loop. The Roman Road roundabout is often navigated twice on the same route, so don't rely on memory for your exit.

Aylestone Hill / Venns Lane / Worcester Road roundabouts (east)
Routes 3, 7 and 8 take you east through the Aylestone Hill and Venns Lane roundabouts. These larger roundabouts on the A438/A4103 are less familiar than the residential examples and approached at a faster pace — signal earlier and position yourself in the correct lane before you arrive.
