What to Expect at Knaresborough

  • With 5.1 roundabouts per route on average, Knaresborough is more roundabout-intensive than most UK centres. Route 13 has the highest concentration with 9, including A658 BY-PASS.

Grimbald Crag Way and Wetherby Road are used on every route and the DTC sits at the end of Grimbald Crag Close. Most tests return via "Grimbald Crag Way left, Grimbald Crag Close right" — two turns in quick succession at the very end of the test. Make sure you know this final approach before your test day.

York Road / York Place / High Street traffic light corridor
York Road, York Place and High Street are used on 9-11 routes each and have traffic lights at multiple points. Routes describe "T/L left" and "T/L right" in sequence along this corridor — count the lights and position early, especially at the busy Park Row and Bond End junctions.

A658 Bypass / Grimbald Crag Way roundabout pair
The A658 Bypass and Grimbald Crag Way roundabouts appear together on eight routes. Several routes use both in sequence — "roundabout right, roundabout left" — on the bypass approach. These are larger roundabouts than the mini roundabouts elsewhere on the test, so give yourself more time to position.

Boroughbridge Road / Scriven Road / Greengate Lane mini roundabout area
Boroughbridge Road appears on seven routes and the Scriven Road and Greengate Lane mini roundabouts are used on four. These compact junctions appear in the quieter northern part of the route — don't let the low traffic levels cause you to relax your approach technique.

Halfpenny Lane / Chain Lane / Stockwell Lane mini roundabout sequence
Routes 6, 8 and 9 navigate the Halfpenny Lane mini roundabout series. The instructions describe up to three consecutive mini roundabouts — "mini roundabout right, mini roundabout left, mini roundabout right" — in a residential area. Take each one individually and don't allow the sequence to blur into a single manoeuvre.
